As the Nets prepare for Deron Williams to become an unrestricted free agent Sunday, they’re doing everything they can to show their superstar point guard that re-signing is the best decision he can make.
Their latest attempt to show how much they care about him was parked across the street from his SoHo apartment when Williams and his family woke up yesterday. The Nets arranged for a flatbed truck to be outside with a large sign on the back to celebrate his 28th birthday.
It read, “Happy Birthday Deron! from your Brooklyn family,” and a picture (right) was posted on Twitter by Williams’ wife, Amy, who tweeted at Williams and said, “this is parked in front of our house!”
Not to be outdone, the Dallas Mavericks — Williams’ hometown team and the Nets’ biggest competition for his services — enlisted the help of the Texas Rangers to wish Williams a happy birthday. During their game in Arlington last night, the Rangers displayed on their scoreboard: “Happy Birthday Deron Williams Be A Maverick!”
Williams will be the best player available in this year’s free-agent class, and the Nets hope to convince him to remain with the team and become the long-term face of the franchise as they begin play in Brooklyn this fall.
The Mavericks can offer Williams just a four-year deal, but the Nets can offer him an extra year and more money than any other team.Follow @NYPostsports
