It was a banner year for Manhattan softball.

Typically not one of the city’s power boroughs in the sport, Manhattan had three teams advance to the PSAL Class A second round – Environmental Studies, LaGuardia and Manhattan Center, which upset Petrides.

Environmental ended up going to its first-ever quarterfinals and Lab Museum United also made it to the Class B semis. Beacon had a fine regular season in the ‘B’ league as well. The talent was ample as far as players went also.

Environmental Studies reached new heights this season, advancing to the PSAL Class A quarterfinals. The Eagles won their third Manhattan A division title in four seasons, but finally broke through to the final eight of the citywide playoffs. And there was no way they could have done it without Jimenez.

“The main ingredient is her,” Environmental coach Jose Ferrer said. … “She’s been a pillar for our team.”

Jimenez was 11-4 with a 1.52 ERA in the regular season and gave up just 69 hits in 97 innings. In the playoffs, she pitched to a 1.75 ERA and gave up just one earned run against second-seeded James Madison in a 4-1 quarterfinals loss. Jimenez, who will try to walk on next year at George Mason, did it all while battling childhood diabetes, which she was diagnosed with when she was 7.

Ferrer took home this honor last year and every season he is in the conversation. But this was the season that Environmental Studies finally took that next step, reaching its first-ever PSAL Class A quarterfinals. All the hard work put in paid off when the Eagles defeated InTech Academy, 5-4, in the second round in their final at bat. For a school that rarely gets experienced softball players, it was a tremendous accomplishment.

FIRST TEAM

2B/OF/P Wesley Cady, LaGuardia

With LaGuardia looking for leadership and production when ace Alexandra Sappington went down with a torn ACL, Cady stepped up in a big way. The versatile senior batted .500, scored 14 runs in 14 regular-season games and went 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA in the circle. She helped lead the Athletics to the PSAL Class A second round in their first season up from the ‘B.’

C Chelsea Correa, LaGuardia

One of the most underrated catchers in the city, Correa hit .421 with 10 RBIs and 19 runs scored in the regular season and helped lead LaGuardia into the PSAL Class A second round. Defensively, she was a wiz and that helped her earn the starting spot for the PSAL in the inaugural Mayor’s Cup senior all-star game. Correa picked up an RBI single in that game as well.
