Bowl season is upon us. There are some terrific matchups like high-powered Oklahoma State against high-brow Stanford. There are some pathetic matchups like 6-7 UCLA vs 6-6 Illinois. Both programs have fired their head coaches.

Tips on how to pick ’em all:Do not pick a team that is going through a coaching transition, unless there is no choice (see above reference).

Pick teams with an obvious home-field advantage: Vanderbilt playing in Memphis.

Favor teams with unconventional offenses: Georgia Tech.

Favor teams with established quarterbacks: Boise State with Kellen Moore.

AP
Last week: 5-11; Best bets: 0-3 Season: 103-106-2 overall; 25-17 in best bets Best bets: FIU, Boise State, TCU, Missouri, Ga. Tech, Ohio State

Favor teams with a clear coaching advantage: South Carolina with Steve Spurrier.

Don’t get caught up in distractions: Auburn last year; Penn State this year.

Good luck: See you on the other side.

NEW MEXICO: Wyoming (+7) over Temple

Owls should be nasty after going 8-4 last season and not getting to a bowl. But the Cowboys are excellent in ball protection, played in this game last season and have easier travel/time adjustment issues so they’ll keep it close.

IDAHO POTATO: Utah State (-11⁄2) over Ohio

Aggies are on a five-game win streak. They are a very physical team and will pound. Remember, they should have won at Auburn. Game is in Idaho, giving Utah State a home-field edge.

NEW ORLEANS: Louisiana-Lafayette (+5) over San Diego St.

Home game for the Ragin Cajuns, who played two tough road games in November and should be primed.

BEEF O’BRADY: FIU (-4) over Marshall

The game is in Florida, but, more importantly, T.Y. Hilton will break it open.

POINSETTIA: TCU (-101⁄2) over Louisiana Tech

If the Horned Frogs, who played in the Rose Bowl last season, come to play, they cover in San Diego. Big if.

MAACO: Boise St. (-14) over Arizona St.

Dennis Erickson is out at ASU. Chris Petersen is in at Boise. And Moore plays his final college game.

HAWAII: Nevada (+6) over Southern Miss

First big test of our theory. Southern Miss is the much better team, but coach Larry Fedora is heading to North Carolina and this is a long trip to Hawaii filled with distractions.

INDEPENDENCE: Missouri (-41⁄2) over UNC

Gary Pinkel is staying at Missouri with star-in-the-making James Franklin. Everett Withers, the interim coach who succeeded Butch Davis but didn’t get the job, has no leverage.

LITTLE CAESARS: Western Michigan (+21⁄2) over Purdue

Broncos played two Big Ten teams tough this season. They won’t be wide-eyed by the 6-6 Boilermakers.

BELK: NC State (-21⁄2) over Louisville

Love what Charlie Strong is doing at Louisville, but the game is in Charlotte and freshman QB Teddy Bridgewater has to go through the growing pains.
