Aiding CUNY students

Cuny Law is offering struggling third-year students the option of an additional semester of intensive coursework to increase their chances of passing the bar (“CUNY Law Shielding Bad Grads From Bar,” Feb. 3).

This measure is modeled on successful programs at other law schools and is consistent with the tougher academic standards the faculty passed and the CUNY Board of Trustees approved last semester.

CUNY Law’s bar program is not new. It provides no financial incentive to delay.

With the help of donors, we have traditionally offered modest grants to low-income graduates for two months of living expenses and the cost of a bar-prep course. This enables graduates to focus on studying instead of working to pay bills.

For those who qualify, it doesn’t matter whether they choose to take the July or February bar. The American Bar Association measures a school’s bar-pass rate on an annual basis, which includes both July and February bar takers.

It is our job to make sure every graduate, whenever they take the bar, has the best chance of passing we can offer them.
