Obama a partisan hypocrite

WASHINGTON -- At some point after calming the threatening seas and sprinkling world peace around the globe, President Obama promised us he would find time to bring about a political truce in Washington.

On the Seventh Day or thereabouts, the "post-racial" Obama would become the first "post-partisan" president.

Of all his audacious promises, this was one of his most pedestrian. After all, his party firmly controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress, and his approval ratings were flying close to the sun.

With absolute strength, Obama was perfectly positioned to work with conservatives and Republicans to govern from a position of magnanimity and common sense. Sure, it was a bit startling when just three days into his reign, he hosted congressional Republican leaders at the White House.

"I won," he told them flatly.

Obama works in mysterious ways. So, two years hence, how is all that post-partisanship working out now, you wonder?

Just ask Rep. Joseph Cao, the congressman representing Louisiana's Second District.

Amid all the harsh invective from Obama over the GOP's refusal to go along with his big-government takeover of health care, Cao was the lone Republican to walk across the parched desert that divides the political parties.

Enduring fierce and poisonous criticism from conservatives, Cao reached for Obama's open hand.

In the end, Cao was the only Republican in either chamber to vote in favor of Obama's health-care bill.

Today, as Cao runs for re-election in his majority black district, he has been singled out once again by the post-racial, post-partisan president.

Is President Obama stumping for Cao? Is he refusing to help Cao's Democratic challenger in deference to the Republican who tried to make peace?

No.

The very first ad in which Obama starred in this campaign season was against Cao.

Peace, it turns out, is a one-way street.
