Patriot gets a sugar hit

Bite it, Patriots.

A group of Giants fans showed their appreciation yesterday to Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, who dropped a pass in the Super Bowl that could have iced the game for his team.

They delivered 900 pounds of Butterfinger candy bars to Boston’s Copley Square, with a sign accompanying the pile that read, “Thank you Wes Welker.”

The prank was pulled off by Pawngo, an online pawn shop.

“It wasn’t a direct shot at Wes Welker. He wasn’t the only one dropping passes,” zinged a spokesman for the company.

Despite the insult, some fans mourning the Patriots loss gobbled up the free candy anyway.

Others were not quite as forgiving.

“What a disgrace,” wrote an angry New Englander on a Boston blog that carried pictures of the prank.

“Welker has earned his spot as one of the greatest to ever play the game . . . We should be praying that he stays with the Pats.”

With an average Butterfinger bar weighing in at 60 grams, it is estimated that the pile consisted of about 8,000 bars.

Welker’s blunder led to a Patriots punt and Eli Manning led the Giants on an 88-yard game-winning drive.

Welker led the league with 122 receptions during the season.
