The lunatic busted moments after allegedly plunging a jagged knife deep into a police officer’s head — miraculously failing to kill or paralyze him — is pitching a psych defense in hopes of dodging up to 25 years in prison, his lawyer indicated yesterday.

Bipolar schizophrenic Terrance Hale, 26, looked alert as he sat slumped and cuffed in an orange jumpsuit during a brief arraignment yesterday morning, as his lawyer entered a not-guilty plea to attempted murder, assault upon a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.

“What else could it be?” defense lawyer Ed McQuat told reporters when asked if he would pursue a mental- health defense.

But Hale’s repeated and lucid demands for a lawyer after he allegedly stabbed Officer Eder Loor could hamper an insanity defense.

The judge ordered Hale to be held in jail without bail pending his next court date, on July 11.
