This week's couple: Making history

The NoLIta cocktail bar 1534 is named after the year explorer Jacques Cartier, who discovered Canada, set out. When we sent Michael, a 28-year-old theater usher, and Christine, a 26-year-old interior-design student, we hoped the spot would ignite a dating adventure, too. So did these two do some exploring of their own? Or were they worlds apart? — CS

He said:

Christine and I arrived at the exact same moment. She had a very warm and inviting personality that put me at ease immediately. After we sat down and started chatting, I went from zero to completely smitten even before the first sip of my cocktail. She is strikingly beautiful, with a seamless, graceful nature. It was her inquisitive personality and genuine interest in my life that disarmed me.

We had a few things in common. For example, we both have experience working in restaurants. She also just took a trip to San Diego, which is where I’m from, and that segued into a nice conversation about our families.

In a moment of boldness I asked her if she wanted to see me again. She said yes, and we made tentative plans to visit the New Museum together. I’m looking forward to it.

She said:

As soon as I walked into 1534, I knew it was going to be a great date spot. Any initial nerves were eased right away.

Mike was a little quieter than guys I usually date, but I think it may have been nerves. He did seem very engaged in the conversation, and made me laugh. He just graduated from school and I’m a student myself, so we spent some time discussing what we want to do with our degrees. We also talked about our families and past restaurant jobs. At the end of the night, he asked for my number and we made plans to a visit a museum. I’m sure we’ll have fun!
