Back to the sexy ’60s

Spring 2012 is looking more and more like a Technicolor dream of a season.

If you like your fashion pretty and punchy, a few New York favorites who showed yesterday have something for you.

Peter Som super-sized his florals and dropped them onto tops and dresses with a school-girl primness, and onto cropped trousers paired with chunky platform loafers. Trim little Twiggy coats and tweed separates get subverted with a sliver of denim and an eelskin skirt with a jolt of neon color. The whole collection was like the ’60s on ecstasy.

Jason Wu shared the love of the love decade, but with a more rarefied air. He combined the shapes of ’60s haute couture with the sensibility of pop art for his Park Avenue devotees and White House first ladies. Turning to New York artist KAWS for a floating petal print, the flaired dresses, peplum tops and sculpted skirts got additional badass edge from beaded Peter Pan collars, metal fringe earrings, sunglasses and bondage heels.

Rebecca Taylor shunned the stiff volume and swinging ’60s that are becoming pervasive already this week for more familiar ’70s silhouettes. Floaty chiffon skirts and dresses of pale patchwork textures with asymmetric handkerchief hems shared space with tubey pointelle knit dresses, some paired with paillette-covered sweaters.

Her standout floral print on stormy gray background gets taken out of the ordinary with colored metallic trim. And another print, in blue and white, looks like clouds scudding across a summer sky. But she also signed on for hits of neon color, such as lime and cobalt, paired with nude neutrals that are turning into another theme of the season.
