Sundance 2012: 'Beasts,' 'Surrogate' lead in prizes

9:21 AM, January 29, 2012 ι By LOU LUMENICK

My two favorite films I saw at this year's Sundance Film Festival fared extremely well at last night's awards ceremony in Park City.

Benh Zeitland's 'Beasts of the Southern Wild'' took the grand jury prize in the U.S. dramatic competition, as well as an award for its striking cinematography. Fox Searchlight will release this wildly unconventional low-budget wonder about life and death in a Southern bayou later this year.

The grand jury prize for ensemble acting went to Ben Lewin's wonderful "The Surrogate'' starring the incredible John Hawkes as a polio-afflected poet and Helen Hunt in the title role, with William H. Macy with a priest. This fact-based film also won the audience award for a U.S. dramatic feature and will also be released by Fox Searchlight -- presumably during the next awards season, when it should do quite well.

The other awards at Saturday night's ceremony, which were hosted by Sundance director John Cooper and Kate Asleton after the originally announced host, Parker Posey, fell ill:
