Mets put prospect Martinez on waivers

9:47 AM, January 10, 2012 ι By KEVIN KERNAN

Fernando Martinez, the one-time star prospect outfielder for the Mets, has been put on waivers by the club, according to sources.

If Martinez is not claimed, the Mets will likely re-sign him and send him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Martinez, 23, continues to struggle with an arthritic knee, limiting his ability to play the outfield, and has been sidelined in winter ball. It’s possible an AL club, or the Padres because of Omar Minaya’s influence, will take a shot at Martinez, who hit .183 in 131 at-bats in his brief time with the Mets.

Martinez owns a .443 slugging percentage over his minor-league career. The Mets also put left-handed pitcher Daniel Herrera, 27, on waivers. The moves were made to make room for Scott Hairston and Ronny Cedeno.
