Mets great Gary Carter attends college team's Opening Day

Brain cancer didn’t keep Gary Carter from Opening Day.

Carter, the head coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida, made it to his team’s first game Thursday night, according to the Palm Beach Post.

The paper reported that the 57-year-old Hall of Famer, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last May and whose condition has worsened in recent weeks, talked to his players and told them, "Let's get a win tonight," before Palm Beach Atlantic defeated Lynn University, 3-2.

“He wanted to be here for his guys, here for opening day,” Carter’s daughter Kimmy Bloemers told the paper. “It’s a great day.”

Carter watched the game from a private booth in the press box for three innings.
