Giants tight end Jake Ballard suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee early in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI and, following reconstructive surgery, will miss at least eight months, making it possible he will miss the entire 2012 season.
The Giants already knew that another tight end, Travis Beckum, went down in the Super Bowl with a torn ACL, putting his 2012 season at risk.
Ballard immediately after the 21-17 victory over the Patriots did not think he tore his ACL, saying he believed he suffered damage to his meniscus cartilage but not to any ligaments. The Giants revealed Tuesday that Ballard did tear his ligament.
Clearly, finding one and most likely two tight ends for next season suddenly becomes a top priority for general manager Jerry Reese. The only healthy tight end on the roster is Bear Pascoe.
Ballard went down three minutes into the fourth quarter when he was driven to the ground by linebacker Brandon Spikes as Eli Manning completed a 7-yard pass to Victor Cruz. Ballard was able to walk off the field and actually tried to test his left knee by running on the sideline. After a few strides he collapsed and it is possible he may have done further damage to the knee with that test.
Ballard missed two games late in the season with a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Beckum early in the first quarter went down in a heap and had to get help to hobble off the field.
Beckum and Ballard attended Tuesday’s victory tickertape parade up the Canyon of Heroes in lower Manhattan and the rally at MetLife Stadium on crutches.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Now, there's no doubt Rob Gronkowski will play for the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
The inactives for the Patriots and Giants came out two hours before kickoff and the explosive tight end was not on the list. The question remains how much he will be hobbled by the ankle he sprained in the AFC Championship win over the Ravens.
The inactives for the Patriots are QB Ryan Mallett, RB Kevin Faulk, RB Shane Vereen, LB Gary Guyton, OG Donald Thomas, G/C Nick McDonald, and DE Ron Brace.
The inactives for the Giants are WR Ramses Barden, OL Jim Cordle, RB Da'Rel Scott, DE Justin Trattou, DT Jimmy Kennedy, OT James Brewer, and LB Mark Herzlich.

INDIANAPOLIS – Tom Coughlin told the Giants he loves them.
That was the message during the Saturday night team meeting on the eve of Super Bowl XLVI, as the Giants gathered the night before facing the Patriots. Coughlin prides himself on setting a tone and a mood in his pre-game meetings and this one, at the Giants team hotel, centered on his affection and pride in this year’s team.
Details of the meeting were provided by Pat Hanlon, the teams executive vice president of communications.
A five-minute highlight video set to “In the Air Tonight’’ by Phil Collins started the presentation. The video emphasized the last five games of the regular season, plus the regular-season victory over the Patriots.
Coughlin then talked to the team for 5-6 minutes, talking about the theme he’s used all season – Finish. He spoke of how proud he was of this team, how it stuck together, how the motto the team rallied around – “Belief’’ – inspired millions of people around the world.
Talking from experience, Coughlin told his players when you win the Super Bowl, you first look for a teammate to hug to share the joy. Then you look up into the stands to find your wife and parents because they all are world champions.
For his big finale, Coughlin said championships are won by teams that love one another and said he loves this team. He referenced his favorite motivator and coach – John Wooden – by speaking of Wooden’s Pyramid of Success but this time Coughlin substituted “Competitive Greatness’ – which Wooden put at the top of the pyramid – with the word “love.’’
“That’s all I got,’’ Coughlin said.

INDIANAPOLIS – Around 12:10 p.m. Sunday, Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty took to Twitter and actually made a prediction for what would take place in Super Bowl XLVI. Canty used his social media platform to predict Giants 28, New England 17.
Wonder if Bill Belichick follows Canty (ChrisCanty99) on Twitter?
Around 8 a.m. yesterday the Giants awakened. Maybe not all of them, but some of them, based on their Twitter accounts.
The first to post on Super Bowl Sunday was Jason Pierre-Paul (DatBoyJPP), who tweeted “Good morning everybody just woke up today is Super Bowl damn it’s already here. Time to play some Freakin football. Who’s with me.’’
The first tweet of the day by Antrel Rolle (antrelrolle26) expressed his gratitude to the Lord for allowing him to awaken and his second tweet turned to events of the day: “Today is the day. There is no turning back. No matter what the outcome is today I LOVE my GIANTS including family, FANS and FRIENDS.’’
Pat Hanlon (giantspathanlon) tweeted one of Tom Coughlin’s sayings of the week: “Humble enough to prepare, confident enough to perform.’’ Peter John-Baptiste (giantsPJB), the team’s director of public relations, re-tweeted a message from his native U.S. Virgin Islands wishing the Giants luck. Rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich (MarkHerzlich) wrote “Not too many people wake up on Super Bowl Sunday and are excited to go to work.’’ Tight end Jake Ballard (NYG_J_Ballard85) wrote “Truly blessed with a tremendous opportunity and have to make sure not to let this one slip away.’’
